Post-Christmas Utah Trip

My original hope for Christmas was to go back out to Minnesota.  However, due to various reasons, we decided not to do that.  We did still want to see my parents, so they ended up flying out to Utah to spend Christmas there, and then we drove up to see them a few days later.

We had originally planned to leave early in the morning the Monday after Christmas to drive up to Utah to maximize the amount of time we spent with my parents.  However, Ann's broken arm rearranged our plans a little, as we had to take her in to see an orthopedic surgeon on that Monday.  They took some more x-rays of her arm to make sure that the broken end of her humerus hadn't shifted in a way that wouldn't preserve the "carrying angle" of her elbow.  Fortunately everything looked good and the doctor said that just a cast would be sufficient.  Ann chose pink for her cast.

This coming Monday will be the 6 week mark of getting that cast put on.  We have an appointment with her doctor and hopefully that cast will get to come off then!  After Ann's appointment we drove back home to pick up Ian and Tom and head up to Utah.  We didn't get up to his aunt's house in Orem where we were staying until close to midnight.

We did a lot of driving around and visiting people during the short few days we were there.  The first stop for me was up to Lindon to visit my friend Aubrie.  She was actually out in Utah visiting her parents (she lives in Minnesota right now).  It was fun that our visits to Utah overlapped and we were able to see each other.  Just Ian came along with me.  We put Ann's booster seat in my parents' car (well, technically Janelle's car that my parents were using).

We were only able to visit for a little over an hour before Ian and I had to head out to our next destination.  But we had a great visit.

Our next stop was up to North Ogden to visit my Grandma Cottrell.  I hadn't seen her since just before we left Utah to move out to Minnesota.  Ann was about 12 days old when we last saw her.  I enjoyed getting to get another 4 generation picture since my mom was there too.

A picture with just me and the kids

Ann really enjoyed the snow.  When I got up to the assisted living home where my Grandma lives, Ann was outside in the parking lot with my dad stomping around in the snow.

My mom working on winning Ian over with some M&Ms (it worked - and it also worked to get that kid hooked on M&Ms :)

My sweet, wonderful, amazing Grandma (she's my last living grandparent).  She turns 95 next month.

Just chatting

After our visit with my Grandma, we all went down to Farr's ice cream.  I went here a lot growing up when we'd come out to Utah to visit my grandparents.

Later that evening we went to visit my dad's older sister Susan.

Janelle joined us for this visit (she didn't come up to Ogden as she'd been up there with my parents just a few days earlier for Christmas)

My cousin Daniel was there too and it was fun getting to chat and catch up with him

On Wednesday we drove up to Riverton to see my dad's little sister Janet and her husband Mike.

Mike was able to win Ann over with these big strong magnets

Just lounging around while playing with toys.

Ann thought those magnets were pretty cool (and I love that I actually was able to get a real, genuine smile out of her!)

Ian, however, was not won over with the magnets

The poor boy was so tired.  We had lunch while there and Ian was so exhausted that banana started falling out of his mouth

After leaving Janet's house, we headed down to BYU campus.  Our intent was to go to the Monte L. Bean Museum and see all of the animals there, but it was closed for some renovation work.  So we decided to head over to the Eyring Science Center instead to play around there.

I always enjoy seeing this - outside the Physics department office is a big list of all of the students who have graduated from their department.  The first person listed in 1952 is my grandpa :)

Tom showing Ann the optical illusion of a dollar floating above that stand

Ian trying to grab the floating dollar bill

When Tom and I first met he was working as a CSR (computer support representative) for the Physics department.  This is on a bulletin board outside of the office he worked in and I always found it hilarious (I'm not much of a Star Trek fan, but I know enough about it to find this funny)

On our way back, we stopped at the bookstore so my mom could buy Ann and Ian each a BYU shirt.  The boys hung out by the terrace while the girls picked out clothes.  When I came out of the store, I found Ian sitting on this chair reading a magazine

Doing some more reading with daddy :)  We drove back to Las Vegas after lunch the next day on New Years Eve.  It was a great trip, even if it was way too short.
