A little over a week ago (on the 12th) there had been a huge sun flare with was going to cause some auroras - it was supposed to be visible pretty far south too (like down into Iowa south). Anyways, I told Tom I thought it would be kind of fun to try and see if we could see anything. According to the map I'd seen online, we were right on the border of "good" and "fair" viewing, and it was going to be clear that night. My mom very graciously agreed to come stay at our apartment while Ann and Ian slept so Tom and I could head out. Spoiler alert: we didn't get to see the aurora, but still had fun trying to take some pictures of the stars. Apparently it's hard to catch the aurora even under ideal conditions. There is also a ton of light pollution around here, which makes it hard to see the stars. We would have had to drive to South Dakota to get away from all the light. There was also a really bright moon. I was amazed at how much the moon lit things up.

Just a picture of the stars, looking up from where we were standing.
A view of the sky as we looked northward. The bright spot of the ground are the lights from a farm.
The really bright moon. Even got a lens flare.
Another shot if the northern sky. The orange hue is from the lights on the ground. The grass is so lit up thanks to the moon.
